035. Are the modules part of the Linux kernel or are they distributed separately?

They come with the kernel. There used to be an old package called modules-x.y.z.tar.gz that you could download. This did not consist of the modules themselves but the module utilities needed to handle modules. For obvious reasons this package was renamed to modutils-x.y.z.tar.gz.
