12. What can I do if there is no songwriter's organization in my area?
You can start one yourself! It's a great way to meet other
songwriters and build a support group. It doesn't need to be a fancy
thing. Some large organizations got started with a few individuals
sitting around in a circle sharing what they'd written that week.
You can also join an organization outside of your area. For example,
the LASS (Los Angeles Songwriters' Showcase) contains many out-of-town
members.
You can also participate at "open mic" nights. Check with
entertainment establishments in your area such as clubs and
coffeehouses. Performing at an "open mic" gives you a chance to "road
test" your songs. You can get valuable feedback from your target
audience, while at the same time making yourself known to the public
and getting used to performing live.
