Rofecoxib or Vioxx is used to reduce pain and inflammation.
Rofecoxib or Vioxx is a COX-2 specific inhibitor. Cyclo oxygenase compounds are found throughout the body - for example, in the nervous system and stomach. COX-2 is a type of cyclo oxygenase that produces prostaglandins that cause pain and inflammation. COX-1 is a type of cyclo oxygenase that is found in the stomach that helps protect the stomach lining. Thus, being specific for COX-2, Rofecoxib or Vioxx reduces pain and inflammation with little stomach irritation.
Rofecoxib or Vioxx is generally well tolerated. It has a lower incidence of stomach side effects - irritation, ulcers, and even bleeding - than other anti inflammatory drugs.
People who have a sensitivity to other anti inflammatory drugs may be able to tolerate Rofecoxib or Vioxx, however they should use it with caution.
While Rofecoxib or Vioxx does have a lower incidence of stomach adverse effects, care must be taken when combining it with other drugs, most notably other anti inflammatory drugs, because stomach irritation may result.
