Zafirlukast or Accolate is used in asthma. It is a leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA). Leukotrienes are pro anti inflammatory substances which are released when mast cells are exposed to allergens resulting in broncho constriction, edema, and inflammation.
By blocking these receptors, Zafirlukast or Accolate prevents the release of leukotrienes and thus airway inflammation and broncho constriction is also prevented.
People need to take Zafirlukast or Accolate on an empty stomach to increase its absorption.
