Use:

Azelastin or Astelin is a spray for allergic rhinitis.

How It Works:

Azelastin or Astelin is an histamine H1 blocker. By blocking this histamine the allergic reaction is also blocked - runny nose, sneezing.

Side Effects:

Azelastin or Astelin's side effects include drowsiness and a bitter taste. Nasal soreness, nose bleeds, sore throat, and dry mouth have been reported, however it is not clear whether these side effects are caused solely by the drug or by the method of application.

Cautions for People:

It is unclear whether Azelastin or Astelin is safe to use in pregnancy, thus it should be avoided by pregnant women.

Drug Interactions:

Because Azelastin or Astelin can cause drowsiness, any other drug that also causes drowsiness should be avoided - including alcohol.
