Azelaic Acid

Use:

Azelaic Acid or Azelex is used to treat acne. It is applied to the acne areas.

How It Works:

Azelaic Acid or Azelex is a heptanedicarboxylic acid which has antibacterial plus anti keratinizing actions.
A 20% cream is applied twice daily, but a 60-70% strength may be needed in moderate acne. Azelaic Acid or Azelex is less effective in severe acne.

Side Effects:

Local skin irritation can occur, however the irritation is less serious than benzoyl peroxide or tretinoin. Itching, burning, stinging, tingling, and redness can also occur.

Cautions for People:

Azelaic Acid or Azelex can cause bleaching, however it is less likely to do so than benzoyl peroxide or tretinoin.

Drug Interactions:

Any product that can cause skin irritation will increase Azelaic Acid or Azelex's effects on the skin.
