5.01 What are tick-borne co-infections?

Tick-borne co-infections may be transmitted simultaneously with a Lyme
disease tick bite, and can include: Babesiosis (a malaria-like infection
caused by Babesia protozoa that parasitize red blood cells); Ehrlichiosis
(a bacterial infection caused by several types of rickettsiae, which invade
and kill white blood cells. There are two types of human ehrlichiosis:
human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE), and human monocytic ehrlichiosis
(HME)).
