Here's my two cents worth on palm sanders.

A couple of years ago several of us went down to look over the tools from
a furniture refinishing business that was closing. They had three boxes
of palm sanders: working Makita, broken Makita, and working Porter Cable.
In talking to the owner we learned that about half of his employees preferred
each brand, and when a sander broke they threw it in a box and bought another.
We asked why there weren't any Porter Cables in the dead box and he replied
"They never break.". That was enough to convince me to get the Porter
Cable when I finally bought a palm sander - so far no regrets.
