You might want to check out the Jan/Feb '89 issue of The Woodworker's
Journal which had an article on making a disc sander. They recommended a
1/3 hp minimum and used an 8" diameter disc available from Sears. Speed
was 1725 rpm. Looked like a well designed unit. I would think that for
a 2x4 you would want at least an 8" disc since all the workpiece should
be on the 'downward' side of the disc (toward the table). My advice,
which is probably worth only what you're paying for it, :-), is to go
ahead and try the 1/4 hp jobee and if it's not gutsy enuf for you, keep
your eyes peeled for a bigger one. Check the frame size on the motor
nameplate - if it says 56 or 56T, any other motor with that same designa-
tion will fit into the machine you make. Also means shaft diameter is
1/2".
Have fun. I think the pleasure of making ones own tools is surpassed only
by that of using them.
