A recent (I believe the Nov-Dec 1986) Fine Woodworking magazine had a review
of several pad finishing sanders. You would probably benefit from reading
this before making your selection.
I've had extremely good luck with my currently 6 year old Makita BO4510;
these are typically available for $40 - $50 by mail order if there is no
outlet near you.
I bought mine at Highland Hardware in Atlanta (which doesn't help you any,
but I expect Chicago has even bigger and better stores for woodworkers),
where they had several set up and various wood scraps to try them on.
My only complaints are that the cooling air always seems to blow in my
face when I have to hold the workpiece in my hand and that I need to be
very careful on inside corners to keep the pad frame from bashing against
the adjacent side.
