Many posters to rec.ww have agreed that a very good book to read is
"The Workbench Book" by Scott Landis.

This book contains extensive discussion on the history of the
workbench and different styles of workbenches. There's lots of
colour photo's, many showing construction details of different
benches. There are detailed plans included for a handful of
different workbenches. Discussion of woodworking vise's is also
found in this book

All in all, that book is a better source of information than this
newsgroup. It is suggested that you read the book before posting
questions to the newsgroup. Borrow it from your local library if
you don't feel like buying it. If your local library doesn't have
it, you would be doing them a service in persuading them to buy it.
