I was the person who originally asked for comments on scroll
saws a couple of weeks ago. I never got much of a response.
I am forwarding to you what I got.
The Delta 2 speed got OK reviews but I have learned that this model
is a standard Taiwan model that is OEMed by Grizzly, AMT and others
as well as Delta for a lot less money. Delta may have higher
quality standards. I have not been able to make any side by side
comparisions. I have seen catalog pictures of the Penn State machine
but I don't know anything about it.
My plans at the moment are to go with the Sakura, probably the 14"
model. It seems to be a very good clone of the Hegner. Please
let me know what you learn.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
I purchased the Delta 2 speed in Dec. This is my first scroll saw so I
can't comment on the others you mention. So far I am very happy with
it. The quick change blade system really is pretty easy to use. A
definite plus if you plan to do alot of inside cuts. The Sakura you
mention is 14", while the Delta is 16". The dual speeds is helpful,
seems to cut pine and thin stock fine at the higher speed, oak and
hard woods better at the slow speed. The built in dust blower is also
nice. Does an adequate job of keeping lines visible.
My only complaint against the Delta so far is that I have broken
several blades. However, I suspect that this was my own fault for
over-tensioning them. I don't know about you, but sometimes I feel it
is better to start out with a cheaper tool and upgrade later if you
need to. There is always an eager group of people out there when you
want to sell an old power tool.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Get the Delta 2 speed. If you are doing very fine veneer work - do it
by hand. I do (with a diamond saw blade -very fine). The 2 speed is
good and should last a while. It would be a good machine for you to
start with. If you need any more info let me know.
