I have had a Sears 1HP router for about 6 years and have had to rebuild it
twice so far. I use it mostly set in a router table as a shaper. The biggest
complaint that I have is that most of the heavier bits have a 1/2" shank on
them and the Sears router (and most of the other readily available routers)
only has a capability of using 1/4" shank bits. I have been seriously looking
at the Ryobi R-501 router as it has collets for 1/4,3/8, & 1/2" shanks. This
model also boasts a 3HP motor at 24000 RPM. Another good candidate is Porter-
Cable model 601, which also has multiple collet sizes. However both of these
routers are priced at around $200.00 thru Woodworkers Supply of New Mexico.
