11 Info needed on old but unused radial arm saw

Back in 1980 when I had more money than sense, I purchased a Sears 12
inch Radial Arm Saw (Model 113.23301) which I think was a 1979 model.

It has sat unopened in its original crate until last night (its a long
story involving going back to school, layoffs, and cross-country
moves).

In the years since I bought it I have seen Sears power tools take a
nosedive in quality ... as have a lot of you, judging from the
discussions I have been following. What is not apparent is when did
Sears power tools cross the line from good to garbage?

My interests in woodworking have changed from what they were when I
bought the saw. If I didn't have the radial arm saw just waiting to be
set up, I would rather have a table saw and a band saw at this point.
However, I would not be able to sell the saw without taking a bath on
it, and can't afford to add any more tools right now. I am pretty sure
I can make do with a radial arm saw, if I don't have to fight to keep
it adjusted all the time.

The real question is whether or not a 1979 saw was made decently. What
pieces were hardest hit as quality came down? What should I look for
before I make a final decision to set the thing up? And if I do keep it,
what are your favorite or most useful attachments for the thing?

Someone mentioned a good book on care and feeding of a radial arm saw.
What was the title and author? Should I plan on installing the table
top per specs, or add something to the top? Replys via e-mail if you
don't want to use the bandwidth, but general info for new owners
probably wouldn't be wasted here ... seems like we get quite a turnover
in this newsgroup.
